Scores & Accolades

    Jeb Dunnuck

“From the vineyard used for the first Private Reserve bottling, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Chabot Vineyard is all Cabernet that was raised in 100% new barrels. It has a ripe yet elegant, medium to full-bodied style that carries lovely notes of ripe red and black fruits, chocolate, spice, and dried herbs. I love its balance, and it offers ripe tannins, plenty of sweet fruit, and a great finish." - Jeb Dunnuck, February 2020

“Violets, blueberries and hints of slate. Medium to full body. Firm, silky tannins. A tight and attractive wine. Better after 2022.” - James Suckling, February 2020

"Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Chabot Vineyard is deep garnet-purple. It rocks up with ready-to-sip scents of blackberry pie, red currants and black raspberries, plus touches of garrigue, crushed rocks and charcoal with a hint of wild thyme. Medium-bodied, the palate is finely framed, refreshing and elegantly styled with a slight chew to the texture and an herbal lift on the finish. 505 cases were made.”” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, August 13th, 2020

Vintage

Early season rains brought yields back to normal levels this year, mitigating the extended drought that afflicted most of California over the previous few years. A cool spring resulted in normal timing for bud break, in late March. Temperatures remained fairly cool in May and June, but high temperatures in July and again in September triggered an early start to harvest. Quality was solid for the vintage overall, with little impact from fall wildfires since most fruit was already harvested and in barrel.

Vineyard

Chabot Vineyard lies east of the Silverado Trail, just north of the road that leads up Howell Mountain to Bancroft Ranch and Steinhauer Ranch. The chunks of shiny obsidian heavily strewn through its soil reflect the locale, known as “Glass Mountain.” An underlying layer of pumice and bedrock ensures excellent drainage. The inky, highly structured, deeply flavored Cabernet from this vineyard was the first that Beringer Vineyards elected to bottle as a Private Reserve, in 1977, and it continues to be a frequent component of contemporary vintages of Private Reserve
