“A dark and seductive cabernet, this has stunning forest berries and enormous concentration and freshness. But, as delicious as it is now, this is also built for the long term. Great finish, where the interplay of fruit and fine tannins is complex. Goes on for minutes with dark berries, blackberries and hot stones. A core of greatness. A new wine to give a nod to the eighth winemaker of Beringer, Mark Beringer.” - James Suckling, May 2019

“The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon 8th Maker is a tiny production, special cuvée by this estate that’s based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 80% new French oak. This beauty is a massive, full-bodied Cabernet that boasts a saturated purple color, classic crème de cassis fruit, loads of chocolate, espresso, and tobacco notes, building tannins, and a deep, opulent, powerful style on the palate that needs to be tasted to be believed. It shows the purity and classic style of the 2016 vintage yet certainly brings serious power and richness. It can be drunk any time over the coming two decades or more." - Jeb Dunnuck, February 2020

"Produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon 8th Maker is a fantastic example of a top-notch Napa Valley Cab. It comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of warm cassis and blackberry pie with subtle hints of dried Provence herbs, fertile loam, coffee, yeast extract, olives and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the generously fruited palate delivers plush-yet-firm tannins with seamless freshness and a lingering minty lift on the finish. 1,000 cases were made.” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, August 2020

Winemaking

Winemaking

Fruit for the inaugural vintage comes principally from the Home Ranch Vineyard Block 1 (85%) in Saint Helena and the Steinhauer Ranch on Howell Mountain (15%). Favorite blocks were identified early in the development of Eighth Maker and given extra attention throughout the growing season. At harvest, fruit was hand selected and sorted multiple times to garner only the choicest berries. Extended maceration for 21 days at 85ºF led to fermentation and aging in 500L oak puncheons and oak barrels. The wine was allowed to age for 24 months in 100% French oak barriques, medium toast, largely from the Allier forest in central France.

A dry January was followed by a wet February, while temperatures remained mild. Bud break was early but slowed as April arrived with consistent showers. The growing season proceeded at a leisurely pace, allowing fruit to reach full maturity with balanced acid and complex layers of flavor.

Vineyard

Home Ranch Vineyard At the foot of Spring Mountain in Saint Helena lies the vineyard that first attracted the Beringer Brothers to Napa Valley. Formed of a sloped alluvial fan of iron rich rock and gravelly red volcanic soils with little capacity to hold water, the Home Ranch Vineyard has delivered outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon each vintage for more than 140 years and is responsible for Eighth Maker’s rich fruit and velvety texture. Steinhauer Vineyard At an elevation of 1,800 feet on Howell Mountain, the vineyard enjoys cool mountain temperatures and high solar radiation above the fog line. Volcanic red soils are low in fertility and yield berries with intense, concentrated flavors. Steinhauer Vineyard's mountain fruit contributes firm, fine tannins, elevated acidity, and ageability.
