“There are 739 cases of the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Home Vineyard, which comes from a site in St. Helena and is all Cabernet brought up in 48% new barrels. More blue fruits, violets, flowers, sandalwood, and dried tobacco emerge from this beauty, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, elegant texture, terrific purity and a great finish. It’s another rock star wine in this lineup.” - Jeb Dunnuck, January 28, 2021

“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Home Vineyard is another superb wine in this range. Here, too the fruit really jumps out. Bright red fruit, blood orange, spice and cedar are all perked up by bright, salivating acids. Hints of rose petal and lavender add striking perfume. The 2018 will drink well pretty much right out of the gate. Today, the 2018 is irresistible for its forward, inviting personality.” - Antonio Galloni, March 2021

Vintage

Winter rain in January and February of 2018 eased long drought conditions. After a relatively wet winter, both bud break and flowering occurred later than average, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Warm summer temperatures with generous sun exposure moderated by cool marine influences in the mornings and evenings, allowed for a long summer growing season, virtually uninterrupted by any major heat spikes. The mild summer run was followed by extended fall sunshine with moderate heat and no early rains, creating near-ideal conditions to allow fruit extended hang time for gradual ripening, increase sugar levels and flavor complexity development.

Vineyard

The St. Helena Home Vineyard is largely responsible for the establishment of Beringer Vineyards because this site, situated around the present-day winery, first attracted founder Jacob Beringer to the property in 1875. The vineyard is formed of a sloped alluvial fan of rock and gravelly soils with little capacity to hold water. Planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, its fruit has been a key component of the Private Reserve Cabernet since 1982. St. Helena Home Vineyard Cabernet is characterized by classic Cabernet flavors of berries and black cherries layered with licorice and spice and a fleshy mid-palate. The 2018 St. Helena aged 21 months in French oak barrels. Careful attention is paid to vineyard blocks, which are kept separate and vinified with a goal of extracting maximum flavor.
